Title: Seeing Through Received picture of a Yellow Rose, seemingly bursting through a Black Void. It was titled “Seeing Through”... Mused upon this and decided to use the title “Seeing Through” as seeing through lies and deception and to a lesser extent, “seeing” something “through” (if that makes sense) In that vein, I decided to write from a place based on personal experience. The lyric inspired by the Title; “I’m seeing through you and all of your lies” refers not only to the many lies thrust upon me but also the ones I delude myself into believing and they have proven to be the harshest to overcome. To grow a flower from seed needs very specific criteria and when it receives this criteria, not even concrete, rocks or stone can stop it. I’d like to think we are all a bit like that. The caption was "Life is Beautiful" my song reflects that image and ponders what is the cat seeing as it surveys its domain. Is it indeed the beauty of what it sees in the world or is there something else we don't see? "

Devastation to dreams The photo was of an artwork that the artist had created from an art my word book about the architect Christopher Wren. He had had a difficult start in life, deaths and poverty. His life improved after he helped rebuild London after the fire in 1666. He was knighted and lived well into his 90’s. My song is about overcoming hardships and living your dreams. Title: SAMSARA

Day of the Dead: Dancing Bones The photo of a skeleton holding a plate of scones immediately struck me as whimsical and tongue-in-cheek. I pictured the sugar skulls and colours of the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico. I chose a minor key to begin the first movement with (Dancing Bones), and the main theme is dark and melodramatic, representing Death. The middle section is playful, imagining skeletons dancing jigs, before the return of the contrasting main theme. The second movement is a short, creepy interlude (Unquiet Souls); and the third movement (Ghost Requiem) is a processional, with echoes of the first movement theme. I wrote this piece for unaccompanied violin, as death is always a solitary experience, and because in four years of living on the islands, I have not been able to find an ensemble to play with, leaving me and my violin alone.

Maria Cleary, Tony Powell and Reuben Zachary Title: Threads of Wisdom Maria Cleary: Vocals, Ukulele, Who Gives a Crap toilet paper wrapper Tony Powell: Harmonica, Beat Box Reuben Zachary: Audio Engineer To get started, we considered the idea of wisdom – musical wisdom - and the role of traditional instruments that embody and transmit culture and knowledge through music making, combined with the idea of threading instrumental sounds with vocal sounds. We are musicians who play, sing, improvise and interpret by ear. We made then stitched together this collage of analogue sounds in response to the image – the dry gum leaf suggesting a bush landscape, the rhythmic, human line of crochet with its trailing threads, and the background chapter headings which, as it turned out, rang true!

Title: Run Sydney Run It is a cinematic industrial instrumental work attempting to convey the sonic signatures of a little known massacre that took place on our little floating rock of Alcheringa (now known as MacLeay Island) in the year 1895. Data is scarce but the atrocities are very real. As composer, based upon the image I was handed, I endeavoured to travel back as a witness and capture the ambiance of this horrific moment and yet focus on one person within… a brave young girl by the name of Winyeabah Murriabah Kingal. This young lady, who was to become the sole survivor of 3 massacres within our little region, would later on become known as SYDNEY, as that was where she was transported to safety after the horrors she endured at the hand of colonial agriculturalists et al. The piece is a sonic tour-de-force through 4 distinct stages: 1. Tribe at play (0 - 1:30 mark) 2. Rumblings prior to explosion of invasion (1:30 - 3:30) 3. “Sydney” begins her escape- guided by Curlews as she flees horrors no child should ever need to witness.. 4. Relative serenity ( 3:35 - 7:52) as Sydney floats across the bay to safety and a new life.. I set out on this creative journey with a focus on creating a cinematic journey focussing more on setting sonic scenes that transition the representative storyline than attempting melodic/lyrical tropes as my hope is that the listener will conjure their own motifs throughout the listening experience..
